Howells-Dodge Invitational 2016

Howells-Dodge Invitational 2016

On Saturday, December 3rd, 2016, the JV Patriots attended the Howells-Dodge Varsity Invite. The tournament featured 12 Varsity teams from Class C and D schools as well as Elkhorn South’s JV team. The round-robin pool play tournament allowed almost everyone to wrestle 5 matches on the day, which is a great opening weekend tournament for the Patriots!
This year’s JV team is a combination of young talented wrestlers and a few seasoned veterans. They had little trouble running through the field scoring 187 points with the next best team a distant 116.5 points. The Patriots point scorers ended the day with six champions in the first six weight classes, a second place finish, three thirds, a fourth place finish, and a sixth place finish. They racked up 29 pins on the day.

Freshman wrestlers flashed that the future of Millard South wrestling could be as bright as the present. Young phenoms Dominic Deloa and Justin Jeanette pinned their way through the field both finishing 5-0 on the day. Garrett Carbuillido, another freshman, flashed his potential recording a technical fall and a fall in his two matches. At one point he trailed 5-0 in his second match after making a drastic mistake getting caught on his back and almost pinned. He kept his composure and battled back to take the lead and eventually pinned his opponent from Scribner-Snyder. Blake Smith, another freshman who is only in his second year wrestling, finished the day with a pin, technical fall, and two wins in convincing fashion. It is very impressive that four freshman were able to walk into a varsity tournament and dominate the way these four did.

The JV team also benefited from some steady veteran leadership. Garret Svoboda, who would be varsity for any other team in the state, compiled a 4-0 record on the day with two technical falls, a pin, and a convincing decision over a very good Archbishop Bergan wrestler who is currently ranked 6th in the state in class D. Jace Caniglia was 5-0 on the day with 4 pins and a decision over a quality opponent from Oakland-Craig. Ricky Hayden was 4-1 on the day with 3 falls, but fell short in a close match in the finals against a returning state medalist from Howells-Dodge. At one point during the day, a coach from an opposing team asked coach Sistek if Hayden was really a JV wrestler because he had beaten one of their top wrestlers. All three wrestlers would likely find a varsity spot on any other team.

Coach Sistek had some final comments after the end of the tournament. “This tournament performance was a testament to how hard these athletes have been competing in the wrestling room and shows just how deep the Millard South wrestling is from top to bottom. While we had some highlights and performed well, the best part of the day was many wrestlers working on improving on the little things throughout the day. This level of competition was the perfect ground to figure out what we need to work on in the future.”
