Crossroads Dual

On Saturday, January 6th, the Patriots attended the Crossroads Dual Tournament in Cameron, Missouri.  The Patriots were looking to go 5-0 in duals for the tournament, which would increase their state record to 107 straight dual wins.

The Patriots began their quest for 107 by wrestling the number 7 team in Missouri Class 2A – St. James Tigers.  Starting at the 106 pound weight class, Caleb Coyle got the Patriots rolling by pinning Kaylynn Crocker early in the second period.  With Dom Deloa stepping in to take a Forfeit at 113 pounds, Blake Jackson and Conor Knopick both moved up to the next weight class to take on Tyler Dover and Ty Lewis respectively.  Both Patriot wrestler won by major decisions.  After Alex Vacha and Blake Smith took close loses against ranked opponents from St. James, the Patriots would string together five straight wins!  Garett Svoboda, Al Cunningham, and Isaac Trumble would each win by PIN in their matches.  The Patriots would win their first dual by a score of 50-22.

Next up for the Patriots was the host school, Cameron Dragons.  The Dragons, who have traditionally been very tough, were down compared to previous years.  The Patriots would begin at the 113 pound weight class, and Blake Jackson started us off by winning by a major decision against a ranked opponent from Cameron.  That win spring-boarded the Patriots into winning the next 11 matches!  Garrett Carbullido, Alex Vacha, and Garett Svoboda each won by decision, while Conor Knopick, Blake Smith, Al Cunningham, Isaac Trumble, Josh Trumble, Krew Tran, Chris Wortmann, and Gavin Peitzmeier all won by PIN!  Caleb Coyle won the last match of the dual by TECH FALL (26-10), and the Patriots won 68-6.

In the third dual of the day, the Patriots wrestled against the Clinton Cardinals.  After Conor Knopick took a forfeit, the Patriots strung together three straight first-period PINS!  Then, Al Cunningham won a tough, hard-fought victory by a score of 10-9 over Isaac Gruning.  Following pins by the Trumble brothers, Krew Tran, and Gavin Peitzmeier, the Cardinals scored their only points in the dual with a forfeit at 285 pounds.  Blake Jackson finished off the pinning explosion by pinning Austin Kline with five seconds remaining in the match.  The final score was 75-6 for the Patriots!

In the final dual of the pool, the Patriots wrestled the other undefeated team in the pool – the 6th ranked team in Missouri Class 2A – Moberly.  Against Moberly, Alex Vacha started us out with a second period PIN against Jack Morgan.  The Patriots then traded decisions with Moberly.  After a 6-1 loss for Blake Smith, Garett Svoboda secured a last second takedown to win a 3-1 decision over Luke Vitt.  The Patriots again traded victories against Moberly, but this time it was pins.  Luke Slater caught Al Cunningham with a pin in the second period, but Josh Trumble picked us back up with a first period PIN!  Moberly picked up two straight victories at 182 and 195 before Gavin Peitzmeier earned a first period PIN against Jarrett Kinder.  Once the weights rolled back around to 106, the Patriots didn’t look back.  Caleb Coyle, Dom Deloa, Blake Jackson, and Conor Knopick all scored bonus points for the team, and the Patriots won by a score of 51-24.

The fifth and final dual in the tournament pitted the Patriots against the undefeated team from the opposite pool – the returning Arkansas 6A-7A State Runner-ups – Springdale Har-Ber.  Har-Ber was not short on talent for this tournament.  They had 6 returning State Placers in their line up!  Started at weight 138 for this dual, Har-Ber was able to go out in front of the Patriots by a score of 7-0 after Blake Smith lost by a major decision and Garett Svoboda dropped a close 5-2 decision.  Al Cunningham got us back on track with a first period PIN over Alex Wilson!  Following that match, the Trumble brothers turned in back-to-back PINS to put us up 18-7 after five matches.  Not to be outdone, Har-Ber then strung together four straight victories (only one by bonus points), and Har-Ber led the score 20-18 after nine matches.  The Patriots were not going to quit, however.  The Patriots would go on to win final five matches (all but 1 by bonus points)!  Caleb Coyle won by TECH FALL at 106 pounds against Alejandro Ramirez; Blake Jackson PINNED Trevor Davis; Conor Knopick won by MAJOR DECISION against Brendan Davis; Garrett Carbullido won by PIN over Caleb Palfreeman; and, Alex Vacha finished the dual off by a 7-4 decision.  The final team score for the Patriots was 42-20.
