Council Bluffs Classic

For the first time in Millard South history, the Patriot’s Varsity team traveled the short distance across the river to the 40-team, Council Bluffs Classic.  There were multiple teams ranked in the Intermat Top 50 teams and multiple individuals ranked in the top of their 10 respective weight classes.

To start the tournament, each wrestler was placed into 8 pools with up to 5 guys in each pool.  Depending on how a wrestler did, he would either be placed in the “Gold” or “Silver” pool. The Gold pool would place from 1st-16th.  The Silver pool would place from 17th-32nd. After the first day of wrestling, Millard South had 9 guys in the Gold pool and 5 guys in the Silver pool.

The wrestling on Saturday was INTENSE!  Some of the best matches of the tournament happened during the day on Saturday.  The Gold and Silver pools wrestled through a 16-man bracket to determine the champions of each pool.  A wrestler could go 4-0 on Saturday and win the Silver pool. That is exactly what Garrett Carbullido and Alex Vacha did!  A wrestler could go 4-0 on Saturday and win the Gold pool. That is exactly what Isaac and Josh Trumble did! Also placing in the top 8 was Caleb Coyle (5th), Conor Knopick (3rd), Antrell Taylor (2nd), Tyler Antoniak (8th), and Gavin Peitzmeier (6th).

A few notable matches from the tournament were the finals match between freshman, Antrell Taylor and senior, two-time State Champion and Cornell recruit, Philip Moomey.  Moomey used two stalling calls against Taylor and fended off a last second takedown down attempt to win 2-1. Alex Vacha came from a 13-2 deficit in the semi-finals of the Silver pool to earn a PIN over Tanner Ownes of Underwood!  It just goes to show that a little heart can go a long way.
