Following the action at Columbus on Thursday, January 3rd, the Patriots headed out of the state to Missouri to partake in the Crossroads Duals in Cameron, Missouri for the fourth consecutive year. This would serve as the last tournament of the winter break before school started back up. It would be the last warm-up before the Metro Conference Tournament. Wrestling some of the top teams from Class 2 in Missouri, the Patriots did not disappoint.
In Round 1, the Patriots faced off against Osage, and the dual started at the 170 pound weight class. Krew couldn’t hold off a flurry of moves and ended up getting pinned with just a few seconds left in the second period. However, the next six Patriots were able to step on the mat and score points for the team. Of the next six Patriots, only Isaac Trumble took his opponent into the second period! Josh Trumble scored a pin in under a minute while Gavin Peitzmeier and Caleb Coyle finished their opponent off in the final few seconds of the first period. Chris Wortmann and Jeremy McKee received forfeits to score six points for the team.
Garrett Carbullido ran into an Osage buzzsaw in number 4 ranked and undefeated Ryan Schepers. Following a forfeit to Conor Knopick, Antrell Taylor completed his takedown and turn clinic with a 22-4 tech fall! Tyler Antoniak followed up his freshman buddy with a first period pin. Alex Vacha and Barrett Hermanson finished up the dual with pins of their own. Final score: Millard South defeated Osage 65-18.
In the second dual of the pool, Millard South took on Savannah, Missouri. Savannah was only able to fill 8 of the weight classes, and of those 8 weight classes, the Patriots earned a pin in 7 of them! Josh Trumble, Jake Mayville, and Alex Vacha were able to secure pins in under 30 seconds! Final score: Millard South defeated Savannah 83-0.
In the third dual of pool play, the Patriots took on Clinton, Missouri. For this dual, there were 13 contested matches. The Patriots were able to earn a pin in all of them except for 120 where Garrett Carbullido had a tough go with the number 2 ranked wrestler from Missouri. Josh Trumble got the dual started off with a first-period pin, and his brother Isaac, finished the dual off with a first-period pin. Final score: Millard South defeated Clinton 78-6.
For the championship of the pool, Millard South would face Chillicothe, Missouri. Chillicothe, the 5th ranked team in Missouri Class 2, would bring 5 ranked wrestlers to the mat. The problem for them is that their ranked wrestlers matched up against our ranked wrestlers. With the dual starting at 285 pounds, Chris Wortmann did battle against Chillicothe’s number 2 ranked wrestler, Keegan Valdez. Valdez came into the tournament with only 1 loss, but after a 6-minute match with Wortmann, he gained another loss. Chris used a second period escape and a third period ride out to secure a 1-0 victory! Caleb Coyle, Jeremy McKee, and Conor Knopick followed that match up with first period pins, and Garrett Carbullido received a forfeit in this dual. At 132 pounds, Antrell Taylor wrestled number 5 ranked and 1-loss, Lavery Jones of Chillicothe. Taylor worked like a mad-man to get the pin or tech fall, but Jones stayed tough and gave up the major decision by a score of 21-7. Tyler Antoniak then wrestled undefeated and 4th ranked Colten Sewell. In a closer match than the score indicated, Antoniak eared an 11-4 decision. Those two victories over ranked opponents gave the Patriots all of the momentum. Following those two matches, the Patriots strung together 6 straight pins and a forfeit. Included in those pins was Gavin Peitzmeier’s pin over Missouri’s number 4 ranked Matthew Callen in 27 seconds. Final score: Millard South defeated Chillicothe 76-0.
In the final dual of the day, Millard South wrestled against the number 2 team in class 2 for Missouri, Odessa. With the dual starting at 106 pounds, Caleb Coyle earned his 4th pin of the day with a first-period pin over Dalton Coe of Odessa. After a forfeit at 113, Garrett Carbullido ran into his 3rd buzzsaw of the tournament – 5th ranked Shon Badder. In the next three matches, though, the Patriots recorded two pins and a forfeit. Conor Knopick and Antrell Taylor recorded first-period pins while Tyler Antoniak received a forfeit. In the next four weight classes, the Patriots ran into a string of ranked opponents from Odessa. Shane Quandt lost his match to the number 2 ranked and undefeated wrestler, Gavin Gross. Alex Vacha lost a 2-0 decision to the number 3 ranked and one-loss wrestler, Bryce Palmer. Barrett Hermanson lost his match to the number 1 ranked and two-loss wrestler, Luke Mallizzi. Krew Tran lost his match to the number 3 ranked and three-loss wrestler, Jake Evinger. Isaac Trumble stopped the bleeding with a first-period pin! His brother followed it up with another first-period pin – his 5th pin of the day! Gavin Peitzmeier went back and forth with the number 3 ranked wrestler from Odessa, Xavier Walsh, but earned the pin with only 13 seconds left in the second period. Jake Mayville closed out the day with a 10-2 major decision. Final score: Millard South defeated Odessa 52-27.
