Battle of the Millard Schools

On Thursday, December 21st, the Patriots attended the battle of the Millard Schools at Millard West High School.  The Patriots were looking for their 100th and 101st consecutive dual victories against Millard North and 6th ranked Millard West.

The format of this dual is unlike any dual we have been in before.  Half of the team (106-145) were wrestling on one mat against one team while the other half of the team (152-285) were wrestling on the other mat against the other team.  We started out with our heavier weights wrestling the heavier weights from Millard West.  The lighter weight guys had a BYE the first round.

The first wrestler up for the Patriots on the night was Junior, Al Cunningham at 152 pounds.  After a back and forth battle, Al tied up the match in the third period and won a very close match in overtime with a takedown.  That match proved to be the springboard that the Patriots needed!  After that match, the Patriots won 5 out of the next 6 matches (all 5 by PIN) and took a 33-5 lead heading into the light weight matches against Millard West.

The light weights’ first wrestled against Millard North.  The Patriots again won 6 out of the 7 matches in the dual.  Caleb Coyle, Blake Jackson, Blake Smith, and Garett Svoboda all won by pin, while Conor Knopick won by forfeit and Garrett Carbullido won by a 10-5 decision.  The Patriots were leading Millard North by a score of 33-4 at the halfway point in the dual.

The third, and final round of the triangular proved to be the most exciting on the night.  On one mat, the lighter weights were wrestling the lighter weights from Millard West, while on the other mat, the heavier weights were wrestling the heavier weights from Millard North.  Against Millard West, the Patriots came out firing on all cylinders!  After a tough win by Caleb Coyle, Blake Jackson made quick work of Wyatt May.  The 120 pound match was one of two ranked wrestlers – Conor Knopick (#4) and Camden Russell (#3).  After giving up a first-period takedown, Conor quickly turned the table in the third-period.  After Conor scored a takedown, he proceeded to put Russell on his back and earn a third-period pin!  The Patriots would drop 3 out of the next 4 weights, but the damage had been done.  The Patriots beat Millard West by a score of 54-19…the same exact score as the duel against Millard North!
