Last year, the Patriots lost the A-2 district by .5 on the last match of the day to Kearney. This year, looked at one time to be Déjà vu, but the undefeated Patriots rallied in the end to put the Bearcats away by 14 points. In doing so, the Patriots would send 13 wrestlers to state, 5 of them being crowned champion. The last 5 Patriot wrestlers would all win their medal round match to put the championship in the bag. The A-1 district would prove to be the toughest in state featuring 4 top 10 ranked teams. By the end of the day, three of the teams would qualify for the state duals as well. Alex Cloyd would be on fire in the finals beating his Nemesis by a major decision to earn the championship on the day. Three Patriots would finish the day as champions maintaining their undefeated records.

“I don’t know how it happens, but for the second year in a row, we draw the toughest district in the state,” said head coach Doug Denson. “Kearney is a strong team and very well coaches. You don’t get any freebies against these guys. Our guys had to dig deep to get this championship.

“We didn’t wrestle lights out,” said assistant head coach Jay Meneely. “However, we did wrestle hard and well enough to win. If we are going to win the state title next week, we are going to have to step it up a little more. We have to be the team to want it more than anyone else.”
