Millard South outlasted a couple of Class B juggernauts to win the 2019 Plattsmouth Invitational that took place at on January 19th, 2019. Weather tried to keep the tournament from happening, but with a break in the cold and freezing rain for a few hours, a slight delay in the start time was all that was needed. In this tournament, they used a bracket type where if a wrestler made it to the semi finals, the worst they could get was 4th place. Millard South was able to put 11 of the 14 wrestlers into the semi finals! The Patriots also went 10-2 in the final round of wrestling!
Starting the Patriots out was 38-4 sophomore, Caleb Coyle. With two pins and a tech fall in his first three matches, Caleb made it to the finals where he wrestled against Class B number 4, Grady Arends. After putting on a takedown clinic through the first three periods, Caleb earned a major decision by the score of 14-6.
Jeremy McKee’s only loss on the day was a hard fought match against number 1 ranked and undefeated Garrett Grice of Bellevue East. Jeremy finished in 3rd place with two pins and a decision against Jalen Maher of Auburn.
Garrett Carbullido made the semi finals after a 7-5 decision over Caden Corcoran in the quarter finals. After a loss in the semi’s, he came back with a tough loss over Plat Plot Soe of Lincoln High in a match that he was winning until the final seconds of the match. We will see Lincoln High in our district, and I would bet Garrett wins the next match against him!
Conor Knopick received a BYE in his first match, but followed it up with a pin and a major decision in his next two matches to make the finals. His finals opponent was number 4 ranked Collin Quandt of Grand Island Northwest. Conor controlled the whole entire match and won by a score of 6-0.
Following him were the two “fab” freshmen, Antrell Taylor and Tyler Antoniak. Each guy made the finals and won first place! Antrell won by a fall over 30 match winner Caelan Hester of Bellevue East in the quarter finals, then won by major decision in the semi’s and won by major decision in the finals against Hank Frost of Blair. Tyler Antoniak didn’t waste anytime in his matches with a first period pin in the quarter finals, a 13-3 major decision in the semi’s and a 27 second pin in the finals against Charlie Powers of Blair.
Shane Quandt filled in for Blake Smith who was out sick this weekend. Shane won in the consolations by pin by dropped a close decision to Parker Harrahill of Elkhorn by a 5-4 score. Shane was leading the whole match until the 3rd period when he gave up a takedown and back points in the final seconds of the match.
Alex Vacha earned his 100 career Varsity win in his last match of the tournament. He pinned his first opponent, Blake Kidder of Elkhorn, and followed that up with a 6-2 decision in the quarter finals. After a semi final loss, Alex earned his 100 win with a pin over Quinn Thew of Lincoln High in the final seconds of the first period.
At 160 pounds, Alex White reached the semi finals after a 5-3 ultimate tie breaker win against Jose Costilla of Grand Island Northwest. After a loss in the semi finals, Alex won his last match of the day with a 7-2 decision over James Larson of Bellevue.
At 170 pounds, Krew Tran used 4 pins en route to a 5th place finish as he couldn’t get into the 3rd and 4th place match. He lost in the quarter final to Class B’s number 3 ranked Ace York of Fairbury. In his final match of the day, he was able to pin the number 3 ranked wrestler of Class B, Brogan Fehlhafer of Seward.
Isaac Trumble upped his undefeated record to 41-0 after going 3-0 at the invite. He also earned his 100th pin of his career during the tournament. He pinned his first two opponents in the first period before meeting Class A’s number 4 ranked wrestler, Cedric Relford of Elkhorn. After a back and forth battle, Isaac got the PIN in the second period.
Josh Trumble at 195 pounds cruised to the finals after two pins in his first two matches. His first match against Evan Johnson of Elkhorn went into the second period before Josh earned the fall, and his semi finals match against Nathan Henry of Harlan didn’t make it out of the first period before Josh earned the fall. In the finals, he dropped just his 4th match of the season – a pin against Class B number 2 ranked Grady Griess of Grand Island Northwest.
Gavin Peitzmeier placed 3rd place at 220 pounds. He earned a pin in his quarter finals, but lost a close match to Class B number 2 ranked Devin Pfeifer of Plattsmouth. In his final match of the day, he was able to secure a pin in the second period against Gabe rand of Blair.
Chris Wortmann filled in for Jake Mayville as he served his suspension for getting ejected from the Metro Tournament. Chris lost by a first period pin against Dalton Abbott of Seward, but picked up a 5-1 decision against Trent Hall of Auburn. Chris was eliminated from the tournament after a second period pin against Beau Morgan of Elkhorn.
