Another exciting year for Winter Nationals. The tournament had record numbers of wrestlers this year. The Millard South wrestlers battled in many large brackets. This is our home tournament and we always plan to have a good showing. MSWC sent 23 wrestlers to this national tournament. A lot of these wrestlers were in their first national event ever.
Out of the wrestlers that competed, a couple stoodout from the crowd in their matches. Michael Hensley, who tried out basketball last year, is back with a wrestling vengeance this season! His first match was a barn burner that ended up in triple overtime. Unfortunately, he lost that match, but learned a lot in the process. Another wrestler who wrestled at the Novice level last year, but took up the challenge was Toris Rudd Jr. Toris, who’s an amazing athlete, has started to come in his own in this sport. Toris, who was fell just short of placing, wrestled with awesome aggression and continues to impress coaches with his improvements.
This brings us to our more seasoned travel wrestlers. Winters is always a tough test for our club. It is the toughest tournament we do all year. This year was no different with the tournament numbers at an all-time high. Some travel highlights start off with a tournament win from Kaiden Heinz. Kaiden had a small bracket, but he wrestled a strategic match in the finals! Kaiden also wrestled in the weight class above him and fought hard for 6th place. Nolan Olafson also had a good tournament losing in the finals in a hard fought match. Nolan continues to grow and learn from his mistakes. Overall all our wrestlers wrestled well and it is beneficial to be able to wrestle this type of competition in our backyard which will heed large dividends in the future.
