The Iowa Christmas Classic youth open tournament was on Friday, December 30th at the Iowa State Fairgrounds (Jacobson Center) in Des Moines, Iowa. This was a new and exciting tournament for MSWC. After Conner Hoy fell sick, only 10 wrestlers competed in the event. When wrestlers decide to wrestle on a holiday break, the competition is stiff! Our wrestlers battled tough and had numerous close matches. Coach Pilcher commented “I really liked our desire and the lessons we learned on the mat this weekend. The tough matches we had will come in spades come March during our state competition!”
The Christmas classic was a unique tournament made up of only states surrounding Iowa. This made it a really competitive regional affair. One stand out was 220lbs Nolan Olafson who lost to the 2nd and 3rd place wrestlers on his way to becoming a 5th place medalist. Nolan was in both matches and small technical adjustments would of seen him in the finals of his difficult 16 man bracket. Trevor Hancock stepped up in a big way wrestling in two different weight brackets. He was definitely outweighed in every match but continued to improve during the day! This was a great tournament to get our wrestlers ready for Winter Nationals!
On one side note Emily Mitchell competed at the same time at a all girls tournament in Avoca Iowa. She dominated her weight class and took home the gold! Emily has been battling boys all season. Coaching staff has been encouraging her all season with the fact that once she was in an all girl competition she would really rise to the top. We’re hoping Emily will be Millard South’s first women’s state champion!
