2016 Sioux City North Early Bird Tourney

On Saturday, November 19th,  Millard South Wrestling Club traveled to Iowa to compete at the early bird tournament at Sioux City North high school. It was a very good showing for MSWC earning several medals including 4 first places!

In the first session we had two wrestlers. With only one novice practice under her belt this year, Khloe Heinz shook off the rust and battled to a 4th place finish.  She had some amazing blast doubles during her matches. And with more practice time she has nothing but great improvements to come. 4th place

Kolton Wilson has stepped up his game this year in an effort to prove to the coaching staff he’s ready for the next level. Last year Kolton came from novice with a limited arsenal of tools in his belt. This year he’s added a lightning quick high-crotch to his tool belt. He hit this move several time in the tournament and it helped him earn a 3rd place finish. When he learns to perfect this technique and makes additions to his tool belt, he will be force on the mat.

The second session saw 13 Millard South wrestlers going to battle. Kaiden Heinz rose to the challenge and moved up a weight class to get competitive matches. Kaiden utilized flawless technique, dominating both wrestlers with his double legs on his way to earning 1st place

Connor Hoy started the year off right with an impressive display, dismantling his opponents. Connor will continue to grow this year with his sights on becoming one of the best 165lbs wrestler in the state! His 1st place finish is a step in the right direction.

Nolan Olafson returned after a long summer and fall break looking like a beast. With increased strength and coordination, he has started to come into his own. Nolan wrestled with power and agility showing great technical improvement on his way to a 1st place finish.

Caeden Olin learned a lot from this tournament. After losing his first match, the coaching staff talked to Caeden about staying in a match mentally and giving himself a chance to win regardless of the circumstances. Caeden then rattled off two straight wins to set up a three way tie for first. He had the best tie breaker criteria winning the bracket.

Benneditto Abrumuah had a great showing this tournament. Benny utilized mat strategy and wrestled hard. In his second match, Benny was ahead 7-5 with short time on the clock. His opponent started to desperately charge to try and get a last second takedown, but Benny stayed in great position and took a great shot to stay in a position not to get scored on. This helped him earn 2nd place.

Josiah Abrmuah had a difficult bracket to fight through, but this rough patch should set him up for further success down the road.  JoJo had two tough opponents that were able to capitalize on minor mistakes that cost him. Jojo took his losses like a champ and came back and pinned his third opponent to help him earn 3rd place.

Tanner Fuller had a good outing for his first tournament. Tanner pinned his first opponent in stellar fashion. His second opponent was the eventual champion of the bracket. This set up a barn burner for 2nd and 3rd place. Tanner had a couple minor strategy mistakes and lost a close match to end up in 3rd place

Riley Weber had the biggest bracket of the day! By the end of the tournament it seemed like he was wrestling every other match on his mat. Riley seemed to be competing in every match even the ones he lost. He ended up in 4th place

Kaden Coates had to wrestle his practice partner from MSWC. This is always hard, but Kaden battled and continues to work on his technique. He ended the day in 2nd place

Creighton Caniglia had a hard fought day against two tough opponents. Creighton continued to compete and wrestle full matches against highly experienced wrestlers! He finished in 3rd place,

Paul Ruhnke had a great first tournament. Paul lost to a complete buzzsaw, but was competitive in that match. His other two matches, however, were great examples of his progress in the wrestling room. Paul was winning both matches until he got into a couple situations he’s never encountered before. With a little more mat time Paul will make the right adjustments which will elad to great strides! He walked away with a 4th place medal.

Will Leavitte had a tough bracket with some experienced wrestlers. To add to the odds Will suffered a elbow injury first match. He battled through this injury all day. Will came back from a huge lead to go into overtime in his first match. With some more practice time and technical adjustements, Will can turn his losses into wins!  He ended the day in 4th place

.

Emily Mitchell wrestled tough all weekend. She was in every match. Some small technique adjustments will be huge for her next tournament. Coaches feel there will be some big leaps and bounds for this young lady. She finished in 4th place

To conclude this was great outing for the Patriots in their first contest! We will continue to grow and work harder as the season goes!  You can find the results on here.
